This update / upgrade problem has been widely discussed and documented on this forum and has since been resolved fairly quickly by the developers of Debian .I think the sources you are using are corrupted on the server you're connected to. I changed the server from which I was retrieving sources earlier and now it got updated instantly and is working fine. It's got high chances of working for you too.
1. Open the Software & Updates. (Note: Not software, it's software & updates)
2. Open the drop down list next to Download from option.
3. Select Other.
4. Click Select Best Server. (option available on the right side in the other menu)
If it is still the same server you used to use earlier, change it to some other server manually you think would work just fine.
5. Click Close.
6. Click Reload. (Wait for it to reload)
Open terminal, update and upgrade system. It should upgrade now.
By the way, it had nothing to do with server selection.
