For what it's worth, a lot of experienced users don't bother with system backup. If you're familiar with the OS and have good notes, it's easier to reinstall and takes about the same amount of time as restoring from backup. Meanwhile, you save the time and effort of updating backups every month (or whatever). Frankly, I mostly bother with system backup so I can use it to restore the system in case of operator error and/or update snafu. Basically the same thing Timeshift does, except manually. In the disaster scenario (e.g., drive failure), I probably would just reinstall.
