He hasn't lost interest in Debian, but ATM he's dualbooting Windows 10 and Qubes OS. Not sure why he went with that one, unless the security aspect intrigued him. Or the possibly of running fully isolated programs. On a personal level, Qubes holds no interest to me, and I wouldn't recommend it as a 1st or even 2nd choice for a Linux beginner.
