It often helps to search the chip-ID (this one is 8086:7a50) with "debian" - https://www.startpage.com/do/dsearch?q= ... ge=english
The kernel database - https://cateee.net/lkddb/web-lkddb/SND_ ... L_TGL.html - shows it as:
vendor: 8086 ("Intel Corporation"), device: 7a50 ("Raptor Lake High Definition Audio Controller")
which also shows it should use the module snd-sof-pci-intel-tgl rather than the generic module.

I'll have to defer to our audio expert @FreewheelinFrank to advise on how to load that module.
I think expert is a bit of an exaggeration.

The fact that sound works OK sometimes suggests to me that this isn't the issue. The generic module is used sometimes depending on hardware/BIOS settings I think. I think your first thought is probably correct.

I'm not sure if this is relevant, but it seems that these sound problems occur whenever I click restart in Windows 11 and then boot into Debian (without powering down). When my laptop is powered off and I turn it on and boot straight into Debian it generally seems to be OK. However, I cannot be 100% certain if it only ever happens when switching from Windows to Debian, and would not ever occur if I only booted straight into Debian. I'm also not sure if it always happens when switching from Windows to Debian, but so far this seems to be the case, although I have only just installed Debian alongside Windows so I haven't been using this setup for long.
It could indeed be relevant. A restart is almost immediate and there will will some residual power in the laptop's capacitors which may mean that Windows' settings in thee sound card may be preserved and cause problems.

To confirm, only boot into Debian after shutting down Windows and leaving the laptop for a few minutes for capacitors to discharge. If the problem does not reoccur over several boots, then the probability is that this is in fact the issue.

Please let us know what you observe.
