Who knows with that never use it, it cannot hurt to remove software you never use. Try removing the task-gnome-desktop package and see what it will do. Using apt --purge -s remove task-gnome-desktop making certain it will only remove the gnome stuff, remove the -s from the command to have it actually removed not just a simulation.So, some good news - I switched to Plasma X11, and games seem to work now. Must be a specifically Wayland issue.
No need to do the fresh install after all, but I might purge GNOME from the system - that might help.
