This is a known issue. Gonna quote what I said in the other thread -

I've seen this a couple of times in the past couple of days. gnome-calculator is freezing while trying to download currency exchange rates, which is a feature I'm guessing a lot of people don't use real often

Two workarounds available while they work on fixing this - one would be to disconnect from the network before launching gnome-calculator, the other would be to disable the download. From a terminal window do

dconf write /org/gnome/calculator/refresh-interval 0

which will prevent gnome-calculator from refreshing exchange rates.
