The exact message I got said that /var/lib/sddm/.config/sddm-greeter-qt6c is not writable. Solved by changing the owner of /var/lib/sddm to sddm. My kwallet data also got munged, but I sorted that out easily enough. Now it all seems to work again. The sddm login screen is slightly different than it was previously, but that's just aesthetics, I'm not concerned about that.
