Thank you for your answers. 18 TB of photos? That is harsh. I once lost a few years of photos because the CDs I stored them on as a backup didn't work any longer and I was to late to contact the online service who deleted the other copy of them.
In fact usually I do temporarily use little pieces of paper until I memorize new pass phrases. But if I need to write them down permanently somewhere I add, remove and change parts of it since it is easier to remember what I changed than the whole phrase and this way nobody can actually use them if they find them and figure out what for they are used. But mostly all my passwords are stored in different encrypted devices which do not need the same pass phrase to be unlocked. It seems rather unlikely that I forget all my essential pass phrases. Therefore, I should always be able to retrieve them ... of course, unless I forgot to store them in the first place.
