Did you follow the Debian guide for installing Steam? If not, you may be in a tough spot. Do you have a Timeshift snapshot or other recent backup? That might be the only way to get a do-over without reinstalling.
By the way, did you consider installing the Flatpak version of Steam? It's a cleaner, less risky strategy, albeit with some costs (especially, takes more disk space and entails large updates).
Note: I don't use Steam, but have a fair amount of experience helping people with failed Wine installations. As you probably know, Steam relies on a version of Wine for much of its functionality.
