By the way, screen (not keyboard backlight) brightness control is another "business" that has dedicated FN keys that also don't work, but for that job, I am currently just fine with the Brightness dialogue that is accessible from the Preferences menu. But on the page that you have linked to, the last post does indeed formulate the wish for working keyboard backlight control shortcuts.
Edit: The FN shortcuts for brightness DO work in KDE; however, they control the Backlight slider in the Brightness dialogue, which has no effect.
