Thanks Steve, after having looked through the github posts linked to 2.2.5 with 6.10.3 kernels, success has been reported on Arch and Fedora, although there are also some test suite failures reportedDebian's 2.2.5 is patched for 6.10 kernels. Maybe the confusion is because, as released, it only supports up to 6.9. I would say, "carry on".
zfs-linux (2.2.5-1) unstable; urgency=medium
.
* New upstream version 2.2.5
- fix bash-completion initialization (closes: #1074597)
- other fixes: https://github.com/openzfs/zfs/releases/tag/zfs-2.2.5
* d/patches:
- refresh existing patches
- add bump-linux-maximum.patch to compile on 6.10 (closes: #1077835)
here.
I think I will go with the flow and run with 6.10.4 and zfs 2.2.5 so booting is automatic. Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

For future package updates I will have to scan 'apt update' for zfs package changes and maybe look for test suite stats before upgrading to avoid this issue again.
Anyway, as the issue is now fixed, I shall mark the thread SOLVED. Thanks to all who helped.
