I'm continuing to work on this and found a site that will return ip's for the lookup based on locations.

I looked at the ip's that were returned for various dns servers and started pinging each to test. I found a few that would respond and I stuck one in my host file to force a substitution. I managed my update but that isn't a long term fix. I also have a bunch more pi's running Debian.
