Which DE/login manager do you use?

I use Xfce (using lightdm) and there you can edit /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf and make sure the following line is uncommented

greeter-hide-users=false

Other login managers may have a different method, but when you post your DE/login manager I'm sure somebody will let you know.
