We do not know what Desktop environment you are running or if you are using a Window Manager alone. So that will have to be determined. Assuming that you are running Debian or a Distro based on Debian then open a terminal on your machine and give the following commands. Paste the output over here and then we will be able to guide you further.

Code:

wmctrl -mecho $DESKTOP_SESSIONecho $XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOPecho $GDMSESSION
If the output of $XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP is unity and $DESKTOP_SESSION is ubuntu then you are on Ubuntu. There is a link in How-to-Geeks on how you can go and do the needfull.

If the output of echo $XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP is KDE and wmctrl -m has a output of Name: KWin then you are on KDE. To change the KDE Lock screen go to
System Settings > WorkSpace Behaviour > Screen Locking. Click on the Appearance and then you will have the option of Wallpaper type. For a more detailed step-by-step follow the instructions given in the link

If the output of $DESKTOP_SESSION and $GDMSESSION is xfce then please follow the instructions given by @CwF earlier in this thread.

If the output of echo $DESKTOP_SESSION is gnome or something similar to Gnome then you are using Gnome. Then it will be different.
