Installation • [Solved] Cannot Find Sound Card on Dell Precision 5480

It's fixed! After looking through the linux mint config and trying a few things out, I realized that mint didn't configure the "mystery device" either. I did notice that it was using a different driver than what I had installed, so I manually blacklisted the one I was using by adding following line to my '/etc/modprobe/alsa-base.conf' (I don't think it matters which '.conf' file you use, but I had this one already):

Code:

blacklist snd_hda_intel
That was it - after a reboot, everything worked! I'm not really sure why the driver was only half-working (letting the HDMI through but not the soundcard itself), but whatever. Thanks to everyone who helped - marking this as solved.
Good work!

Could it be this bug?

This is a good idea! I meant to switch to testing anyways, so I just changed my local repositories.
So the computer is Trixie now?

It could be that when you installed, alas-ucm-conf was not present, so the hardware was not recognised.

Perhaps you installed it as one of mrmazda's suggestions?
Hi mrmazda - thanks for the response! There were a few firmware packages you had that I didn't, but none of them seemed to make an immediate difference.
Or it could be that alas-ucm-conf in your original install did not include your hardware, and that the upgrade to Trixie includes a version that does.

Either way, if the original install configured the hardware to use snd_hda_intel because the hardware wasn't recognised properly, perhaps blacklisting it configured the hardware correctly?

Bit of a mystery! Anyway, glad you got it working!
