I'm not using Gnome at the moment, but I suspect there are other ways of achieving the same behaviour, by editing Gnome settings in a terminal, using a GUI settings manager like gconf-editor, or a general Gnome configuration manager like Gnome Tweaks.

Some of the advice here may be out of date or not apply to a Debian installation, but there should be something that works without the need for an extension.
